Associated with bilateral central loss of vision before 2 years of age
   Albinism
   Aniridia
   Bilateral chorioretinitis
   Congenital cataracts
   Corneal scarring
   Optic atrophy
Multiple sclerosis
Prolonged work in dim light (miner's nystagmus)

Jerk


Nonpathologic
   Extreme lateral gaze
   Attempt to fix on moving objects (opticokinetic nystagmus)
   Labyrinthine stimulation (e.g., cold water in auditory canal)
Drugs
   Barbiturates
   Alcohol
   Phenytoin
   Haloperidol
   Phenothiazines
   Meperidine
   Lithium, thallium, and organophosphate intoxications
Labyrinthine-vestibular disease (e.g., aminoglycoside toxicity)
Cerebellar lesions (e.g., Wernicke's disease, cerebellopontine angle tumor)
Encephalitis
Severe magnesium deficiency
Vascular disease involving brainstem (especially hypertensive infarction, posterior-inferior cerebellar artery occlusion)
Demyelinating disease (e.g., multiple sclerosis)
Brainstem tumor and other lesions
Syringobulbia
Paraneoplastic syndromes
Meningioma, meningeal cyst
Arnold-Chiari malformation
