Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Eye twitching. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. How long have you had the eye twitching?

Why: to determine if acute or chronic.

  2. Is it unilateral or bilateral?
  3. Is there a history of eye trauma?

Why: may indicate a corneal abrasion or corneal ulcer.

  4. Past medical history?

Why: e.g. hemifacial spasm may be related to acoustic neuroma, Paget's disease, Bell's palsy. Blepharospasm may be associated with Parkinson's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy.

  5. Medications?

Why: e.g. anti-psychotic medications may cause blepharospasm.

  6. Occupational history?

Why: e.g. exposure to welding, foreign bodies, chemicals which may cause corneal abrasions or corneal ulcers.

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Eye pain?

Why: Blepharospasm (involuntary contraction of the eye lids) may occur in response to any cause of eye pain. A painful eye may suggest herpes simplex infection, corneal ulcer, acute iritis, scleritis, episcleritis or acute glaucoma.

  2. Visual loss?

Why: may suggest herpes simplex infection or corneal ulceration.

  3. Photophobia (dislike of light)?

  4. Symptoms of hemifacial spasm?

Why: e.g. irregular spasm of the facial muscles on one side of the face including twitching of the eye, usually occurring in middle-aged women.
