Diagnostic Test list for Eyelid swelling:

The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Eyelid swelling includes:

• Eye examination
  • Examine nature and site of the eyelid swelling
  • Visual acuity (vision testing of the eye)
  • Inspect the eye noting the nature of redness, if present
  • Evert the upper eyelid and inspect for a cobblestone appearance (which indicates allergic conjunctivitis) or scarring under the eyelids (which may indicate trachoma)
  • Use fluorescein staining of the cornea to detect any corneal ulceration (if suspect ocular shingles or Rosacea)
  • Eye movements may be restricted in orbital cellulitis
• Physical examination
  • Palpate the bones overlying the sinuses for tenderness which may indicate acute sinusitis or orbital cellulitis
  • Look for the butterfly facial rash of systemic lupus erythematosus or the acne-like facial rash of rosacea
  • Neck lymph nodes may be enlarged in ocular shingles, viral conjunctivitis or Chagas' disease
• Blood tests
  • Renal function tests
  • Blood sugar may detect diabetes which can cause nephrotic syndrome
  • Albumin will be low in nephrotic syndrome
  • Elevated triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in nephrotic syndrome
  • ANA may detect systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Serum electrophoresis may detect myeloma which can cause amyloid and consequent nephrotic syndrome
  • Trichinella spiralis serology - if suspect trichinosis.
• RAST allergy tests - if suspect allergies.
• Urine tests
  • 24 Hour urinary protein elevated in nephrotic syndrome
• Skin prick allergy tests - if suspect allergies to be the cause.
• Throat swab - if suspect streptococcal throat infection as a cause of nephrotic syndrome.
• Swab of eye discharge - if present for microscopy and culture - may be required in some circumstances e.g. essential with conjunctivitis in newborn to detect possible Chlamydia , gonorrhea or herpes simplex infections; if bacterial conjunctivitis is severe or prolonged.
