The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Flushing includes:

• Physical examination
  • Temperature to detect fever which may cause flushing
  • Blood pressure - episodically elevated with phaeochromocytoma.
  • Neck examination to detect enlarged thyroid in hyperthyroidism
  • Abdominal examination looking for enlarged liver in carcinoid syndrome
• Blood tests
  • Full blood count may detect polycythaemia
  • Thyroid function tests to detect hyperthyroidism
  • Estrogen , FSH may provide information concerning menopausal status
  • Yellow fever serology, if suspected
• Urine tests
  • 5-HIAA, if suspect Carcinoid syndrome
  • 24 hour Urinary catecholamines, HMAA and metadrenaline if suspect phaeochromocytoma
• Radiological investigations
  • Liver ultrasound, to confirm liver metastases if suspect carcinoid syndrome
  • CT Abdomen or MRI abdomen to detect adrenal tumors, if suspect phaeochromocytoma
• Bone marrow biopsy - may be required if suspect polycythaemia rubra vera.
