DIAGNOSIS CHECKLIST
for Foot itch

Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Foot itch. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. How long have you had the foot itch?

Why: to determine if acute or chronic.

  2. Are both feet affected?
  3. Are there any other areas of the body that are itchy?

Why: e.g. in flexures such as front of elbow and behind knee may suggest dermatitis; dyshidrotic eczematous dermatitis (pompholyx) has a predilection for the sides of the fingers, palms and soles of feet.

  4. If itchiness of the feet is localized, where on the feet is the skin itchy?

Why: may assist in helping determine cause e.g. itchiness between the toes may suggest athlete's foot; on soles of feet of infants may suggest scabies; on soles of feet may suggest dyshidrotic eczematous dermatitis (pompholyx).

  5. Have your feet been exposed to anything new

Why: e.g. new shoes, chemicals ? - may suggest contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is always confined to the site of exposure to the allergen.

  6. Have you had contact with another person with a similar skin eruption?

Why: may suggest scabies, tinea or other fungal skin infection.

  7. Do you have an allergic tendency?

Why: e.g. asthma, hay fever - may suggest atopic dermatitis (eczema).

  8. Occupational history?

Why: e.g. workers exposed to hookworm include plumbers, electricians, carpenters, pest exterminators, gardeners and fishermen.

  9. Family history of skin problems?

    Why: e.g. atopic dermatitis (eczema).
