Diagnostic Test list for Genital sores:

The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Genital sores includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Examine genital area and note the features of the sores - e.g. ulcer, lump or warts.
    • Note any associated redness, discharge or rash
    • Examine other areas of skin that may be affected - e.g. webs of fingers in scabies infection.
    • Vaginal speculum examination (if not too painful) to observe any discharge and lesions within the vagina and to allow swabs to be taken
    • Feel the groin lymph nodes for enlargement
  • Swab and microscopy of discharge, if present
  • Swab and culture the base of any lesions - to diagnose genital herpes, syphilitic ulcer, Chancroid (Haemphilus ducreyi).
  • Skin scraping and microscopy - if suspect scabies infection.
  • Skin biopsy - may be indicated.
  • Blood tests
    • HIV serology (if appropriate)
    • Herpes serology may be indicated to distinguish between HSV1 and HSV2
    • Syphilis serology, if indicated. Serological tests only become positive six weeks after the primary infection
    • Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) serological test
