Tourniquet use
Hemolysis ( in vitro)
Leukocytosis, thrombocytosis

Intracellular-to-Extracellular K +   Shift


Acidosis
Heavy exercise
Beta-blocking agents
Insulin deficiency
Digitalis intoxication
Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis
Succinylcholine

K +   Load (Especially in Presence of Renal Insufficiency)


K +   supplements
K +-rich foods
K +-containing salt substitute
Intravenous K +

K +-containing drugs (e.g., potassium penicillin)
Transfusion of aged blood
Hemolysis
Gastrointestinal bleeding
Cell destruction postchemotherapy (especially with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma)
Rhabdomyolysis or crush injury
Extensive tissue necrosis or catabolism

Decreased K +   Excretion


Renal failure (acute or chronic)
Drugs
   K +-sparing diuretics (spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride)
   Beta-blocking agents
   Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs
   Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors
   Trimethoprim
   Pentamidine
