for Hypocalcemia

Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Hypocalcemia. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. Symptoms of low calcium?

    Why: e.g. pins and needles, numbness around the mouth, cramps, anxiety, muscular contractions (tetany). The symptoms may be followed by seizures, stridor and psychosis.

  2. Sunlight exposure?

    Why: lack of sunlight exposure can cause Vitamin D deficiency and osteomalacia and thus low calcium.

  3. Past medical history?

    Why: e.g. acute pancreatitis, chronic renal failure, DiGeorge's syndrome, hypoparathyroidism.

  4. Past surgical history?

    Why: e.g. immediately following removal of thyroid or parathyroid low calcium levels are usually transient.

  5. Medications?

    Why: some medications may cause low calcium levels including calcitonin and diphosphonates; prolonged laxative use can cause low magnesium and thus low calcium.

  6. Family history?

    Why: e.g. X-linked hypophosphatemia (rickets).

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Symptoms of chronic renal failure?

    Why: The early stages of renal failure are often completely without symptoms. Later symptoms may include tiredness, loss of appetite, insomnia, frequency of urination, itch, nausea, vomiting, restless legs.

  2. Symptoms of DiGeorge syndrome?

    Why: Presents in infants usually in the first few weeks of life with signs of congenital heart disease (blue lips and skin, shortness of breath, poor feeding, failure to thrive) and later with intellectual impairment, visual impairment (from cataracts).

  3. Symptoms of pseudohypoparathyroidism?

    Why: e.g. short stature, short metacarpal bones (hand bones), intellectual impairment.

  4. Symptoms of rickets?

    Why: e.g. bowing and bending of the legs when the child starts to walk, delayed dentition, muscular weakness.
