  • Skin examination
    • Inspect carefully for subtle skin disorders which may suggest urticaria (hives), dermatitis herpetiformis, eczema, scabies and pemphigus
  • Physical examination
    • Jaundice of skin (yellowing of the skin) which may suggest obstructive jaundice, hepatitis, liver metastases and primary biliary cirrhosis
    • Plethoric (red to blue) facial colour may suggest polycythaemia rubra vera

    • Microscopic examination of any skin burrows to detect scabies mite
    • Patch testing to detect skin allergies
    • Skin biopsy may be necessary
  • Radiological investigations

    • Liver ultrasound to detect evidence of obstructive jaundice or liver metastasis if suspect Carcinoid syndrome
  • Bone marrow biopsy - may be required if suspect polycythaemia rubra vera and leukemia.
