LIP PAIN

Ask the Following Questions:

  1. Is there ulceration or swelling? Presence of an ulceration would suggest herpes simplex, syphilis, and carcinoma. Swelling would suggest there was trauma, a carbuncle, insect bites or stings, and angioneurotic edema.
  2. Is there a rash? The presence of a rash would suggest herpes zoster, particularly if it is unilateral.
  3. Is there a history of trauma, insect bite, or sting? These historical findings are important in determining if the swelling is due to trauma, insect bites, or stings.

DIAGNOSTIC WORKUP

Routine studies include a CBC, sedimentation rate, urinalysis, chemistry panel, VDRL test, and culture of any material that can be obtained from an ulceration if present. A therapeutic trial of antibiotics or antiviral medication can be done at this point. If this is unsuccessful, the patient should be referred to an oral surgeon or dermatologist.
