CRAMPS, MENSTRUAL

There are usually physiologic cramps occurring during menstruation and not associated with pathology of the female reproductive organs. If there is associated menorrhagia, the differential diagnosis of this symptom should be consulted.

Menstrual cramps occur more frequently in the virginal uterus, but may establish themselves after the first pregnancy. All women have experienced menstrual cramps at some time in their life. These cramps may be the first sign of endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or ectopic pregnancy.
