Diagnostic Test list for Nightmares:

The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Nightmares includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Does the person smell of alcohol
    • Temperature
    • Examine for signs of infectious disease
  • Mental state examination - including appearance, behavior, rate and continuity of speech, mood, affect, thought content, evidence of any hallucinations or abnormal beliefs, orientation to time, place and person, attention and concentration, short-term memory, insight and judgement.
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count and ESR to help rule out infectious disease
    • Electrolytes and renal function tests
  • Urine tests
    • Urine drug screen, to help rule out drug induced nightmares
  • Sleep studies (polysomnography) - includes measures of respiration, lower extremity electromyogram (EMG) and ECG. Wil help in the diagnosis of narcolepsy.
  • EEG (awake and sleep) - may be helpful in demonstrating epilepsy and drug intoxication.
