Diagnostic Tests for Penis pain

Diagnostic Test list for Penis pain:

The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Penis pain includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Examine the penis and note any redness, sores or swellings
    • Examine the discharge, if present look for evidence Peyronie's disease (non-tender hard patch may be felt just beneath the skin of the penis)
    • If the penis is erect, determine if the head of the penis is erect (hard) also. If the head of the penis is not hard but the rest of the penis is erect, this suggests priapism
    • Digital rectal examination to assess prostate size, consistency and tenderness
    • Feel the lymph nodes in the groin for enlargement which may suggest penile cancer, herpes simplex, Chancroid
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count and ESR
    • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels
  • Urine tests
    • Urinalysis to detect cystitis or bladder stone
    • Urine microscopy and culture
    • Urine pcr to detect Chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • Urethral discharge sample - for microscopy, culture and PCR looking for organisms that may cause urethritis including Chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, ureaplasma urealyticum, mycoplasma genitalium and Candida.
  • Swab and culture the base of any genital lesions - to diagnose genital herpes, syphilitic ulcer, Chancroid (Haemphilus ducreyi).
  • Skin biopsy may be required to diagnose penile cancer
  • Radiological investigations
    • Transrectal ultrasound, if suspect prostate cancer
    • Intravenous pyelogram if suspect prostate cancer, bladder stones, kidney stones, urethral stricture
  • Cystoscopy - may be required.
