Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Premature aging. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. What symptoms of premature aging do you have?

    Why: e.g. thick skin, wrinkles, balding.

  2. History of significant sun exposure, especially before the age of 35?

    Why: causes premature aging.

  3. History of artificial ultraviolet radiation (UVR) use?

    Why: increases the risk of photoaging e.g. sun lamps.

  4. Ethnicity?

    Why: e.g. photagaing is more severe in white populations living in area with high solar ultraviolet radiation at high altitudes and in low latitudes.

  5. Past medical history?

    Why: e.g. Down's syndrome and hypothyroidism may cause appearance of premature aging.

  6. Cigarette smoking?

    Why: causes premature aging.

  7. Family history?

    Why: e.g. premature male pattern baldness.

  8. Occupation?

    Why: e.g. some occupations are particularly at risk of photoaging including farmers, telephone linemen, sea workers, construction workers, lifeguards, swimming instructors and sportspersons.

  9. Recreation?

    Why: e.g. some recreations are particularly at risk of photoaging including outdoor sports, skiing, mountain climbing, beach lovers.

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Symptoms of progeria?

    Why: e.g. poor growth in children, premature aging, dry wrinkled skin, increased translucency of the skin, premature balding, bird-like face, symptoms of accelerated atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) such as angina, intermittent claudication and transient ischemic attacks.

  2. Symptoms of "photoaging"

    Why: e.g. in people who have had prolonged exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation from artificial sources. Symptoms include wrinkled skin, wizened leathery appearance. The severity of photoaging depends principally on the duration and intensity of sun exposure and on the indigenous skin colour and the capacity to tan.

  3. Symptoms of hypothyroidism?

    Why: e.g. constipation, cold intolerance, lethargy, husky voice , facial puffiness , weight gain, mental slowing - can cause diffuse loss of hair and the appearance of premature aging.
