The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Scaly skin includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Note characteristics of scaly skin
    • Note presence of other types of skin problems - e.g. cracking, pustules, crusting, vesicles, blisters, plaques - can help determine diagnosis.
    • Note distribution of the areas of skin affected
    • Complete physical examination - disease does not usually affect the skin in isolation.
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count
    • Blood sugar
    • Renal function
    • Electrolytes
    • Thyroid function test
    • Radioallergosorbent testing (RAST) - may help in determining exacerbating allergens in atopic dermatitis (eczema).
    • If suspect acromegaly, test growth hormone levels, growth hormone suppression tests after glucose load, IGF-1 (insulin growth factor) levels, pituitary function and prolactin levels
    • 4ANA titre will help diagnose scleroderma
  • Skin scraping and microscopic examination - if suspect fungal or scabies infection.
  • Skin patch testing - used to determine allergens in allergic contact dermatitis.
  • Punch or shave skin biopsy - can help diagnose cause of scaly skin.
