Misdiagnosis and Seizures

Epilepsy misdiagnosed as schizophrenia: The book "Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women" reports on a case of a woman diagnosed with schizophrenia, but later diagnosed with a form of epilepsy called "temporal lobe epilepsy". A variety of sensory symptoms, such as the feeling of the floor rushing upwards, were misdiagnosed as "paranoia". See schizophrenia or epilepsy.

Vitamin B12 deficiency under-diagnosed: The condition of Vitamin B12 deficiency is a possible misdiagnosis of various conditions, such as multiple sclerosis (see symptoms of multiple sclerosis). See symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency or misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Dizziness in children: Dizziness although not a common cause in children can have threatening causes and requires quick diagnosis as the possibility of tumours such as medulloblastoma is possible but the most commonest causes include seizure of the temporal lobe. other causes being migraine, vestibular neuronitis, psychosomatic vertigo, middle ear infections, trauma and benign paroxysmal vertigo. A detailed history regarding the onset, duration and presence of other related symptoms such as fever, earache and discharge must be recorded.

Mental retardation in Tuberous sclerosis: Tuberous sclerosis is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder. It includes mental retardation, seizures and skin lesions. The symptoms may not be seen till late childhood. Seizures are the most common presentation and often treated for the same. Skin lesions often present as leafy shaped lesions seen on cheeks, forehead along with reddish nodules over the nose. Mental retardation and skin lesions are often missed during the diagnosis and hence the diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis is missed. Surgery may be required for cosmetic reasons and removal of the tumor may be necessary in case of pressure symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment helps in detection for the future offspring.
