Diagnostic Tests for Seizures

Diagnostic Test list for Seizures:

The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Seizures includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Blood pressure
    • Temperature (if elevated must consider meningitis, but may be due to respiratory infection, sinusitis)
    • Examine for neck stiffness which most commonly indicate meningitis or subarachnoid hemorrhage but may also indicate brain hemorrhage or cerebral abscess
    • Full neurological examination
    • Examine for papilledema which may suggest cerebral abscess, brain hemorrhage or brain tumor
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count and ESR
    • Renal function tests
    • Electrolytes, including calcium
    • Liver function test
    • Fasting blood sugar
    • Syphilis serology
  • Radiological investigations
    • CT or MRI of the brain may be indicated and may detect a brain tumor, brain cyst, brain malformation, brain abscess or mesotemporal sclerosis (from lack of oxygen during childbirth)
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG), usually with sleep deprivation - to diagnose epilepsy.
  • Video Electroencephalogram (EEG) - limited mainly to frequent seizures or to diagnostic dilemmas.
