for Sensitive hearing

Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Sensitive hearing. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. How long have you had overly sensitive hearing (hyperacusis)?

    Why: to determine if acute or chronic.

  2. Is the overly sensitive hearing in one or both ears?
  3. History of head trauma?

    Why: may suggest fracture of petrous temporal bone causing a facial nerve palsy and overly sensitive hearing.

  4. Medications?

    Why: e.g. barbiturate or benzodiazepine abuse may cause overly sensitive hearing.

  5. Alcohol history?

    Why: a hangover may cause overly sensitive hearing.

  6. Travel history?

    Why: Rabies has been reported in all countries except Australia, New Zealand and Antarctic. Rabies is transmitted to humans through infected dogs, and less frequently cats.

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Mental retardation?

    Why: may suggest Williams syndrome.

  2. Headache?

    Why: may suggest migraine, hangover or meningitis.

  3. Fever?

    Why: may suggest meningitis, middle ear infection or herpes zoster (shingles).

  4. Symptoms of Bell's palsy?

    Why: e.g. marked weakness on one side of the face, mouth sags, drooling from the affected side of mouth, loss of taste on front of tongue, eye may water, pain behind the ear.

  5. Symptoms of Williams syndrome?

    Why: e.g. disorder existing at birth with mental retardation, short stature, elf-like face, oversensitive hearing.
