Acute sneezing is often seen in the early stage of the common cold and can be found in almost all URIs. It is also seen in measles and other infectious diseases.
Chronic sneezing is another matter. When environmental irritants, such as tobacco (especially snuff), ammonia, and other irritant gases, have been eliminated, it is almost invariably caused by allergy. The only exception is prolonged repetitive sneezing, which is usually psychological.
The diagnostic workup is the same as for nasal discharge. Patients with prolonged repetitive sneezing and a negative workup for allergy should be referred to a psychiatrist.
