Glossary for Upper abdominal pain

  • Choledochal cyst, hand malformation: A rare disorder characterized by the dilation of a portion of the biliary system and hand malformation.

  • Gastritis: gastritis is inflammation of the gastric mucosa of the stomach
  • Gastritis, familial giant hypertrophic: A rare inherited chronic disorder characterized by overgrowth of the stomach lining resulting in excessive folds.
  • Hedblom syndrome: Acute inflammation of the diaphragm muscles. As the inflammation abates, symptoms resolve but the shape of the diaphragm remains flattened rather than dome-shaped.
  • Hemolytic anemia: A condition which is characterized by anaemia due to the destruction of red blood cells
  • Hydatid cyst: It is rare for hydatid disease to be encountered primarily in the urogenital system or retroperitoneum. Moreover, prostatic involvement is extremely rare.
  • Hyperparathyroidism, primary: A rare genetic disorder where excessive activity of the parathyroid gland causes increased blood calcium levels which can cause various problems.
  • Iron poisoning: Excessive ingestion of iron - often occurs when children ingest adult iron tablets.
  • Liver abscess: Pus in the liver
  • Liver cancer: The occurrence of malignancy that occurs in the liver
  • Liver vein outflow obstruction: Budd-Chiari syndrome is the clinical picture caused by occlusion of the hepatic veins. It presents with the classical triad of abdominal pain, ascites and hepatomegaly.
  • Lower abdominal pain: The occurrence of pain located in the lower abdominal region

  • Pancreatic cancer: Pancreatic cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas
  • Pancreatic cancer, adult: Cancer that develops in the tissues of the pancreas. The pancreas produces digestive juices and certain hormones such as insulin that regulate sugar levels in the body and tumors can in some cases causes excessive hormone secretion.
  • Pancreatic carcinoma, familial: Cancer (malignant) that develops in the pancreas and tends to run in families. The pancreas produces digestive juices and certain hormones such as insulin that regulate sugar levels in the body.
  • Pancreatic islet cell tumors (non-functioning tumor): A tumor that arises from the pancreatic islet cells and may involve cells that produce excess pancreatic hormones.
  • Pancreatitis: Any inflammation that occurs in the pancreas
  • Pancreatoblastoma: A very rare pancreatic tumor that occurs almost exclusively in children. The tumor can grow large enough to push against and hence obstruct the passage of material in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Pregnancy toxemia /hypertension: Preeclampsia is the development of high blood pressure, excess protein in the urine and swelling during pregnancy. Hypertension is a serious health condition due to the fact that it often causes no symptoms until it is severe. The blood pressure usually returns to normal after delivery.
  • Pyloric stenosis: Narrowed opening between stomach and intestines
  • Sensations: Changes to sensations or the senses
  • Spleen neoplasm: A tumor that originates in the spleen.
  • Splenic infarct: A relatively uncommon condition where a portion of spleen tissue dies due to a lack of sufficient blood supply to the affected tissue for any reason. An interruption in the blood supply can result from such things as emboli, thrombi, twisted blood vessels or blood pressure changes, trauma and blood disorders such as leukemia and abnormal blood coagulation. The severity of symptoms depends on the amount of spleen tissue involved.
  • Stomach cancer: Stomach or gastric cancer can develop in any part of the stomach and may spread throughout the stomach and to other organs
  • Stomach pain: The occurrence of pain located in the stomach
  • Subphrenic abscess: A pus-filled cavity in the subphrenic region which is the area below the diaphragm but above the colon and liver. The infection can occur as a complication of abdominal surgery, acute pancreatitis and trauma.
  • Upper abdominal pain in pregnancy: Pain in the upper abdomen in a woman who is pregnant.
