Misdiagnosis of Vaginal bleeding

Misdiagnosis and Vaginal bleeding

Unnecessary hysterectomies due to undiagnosed bleeding disorder in women: The bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand's disease is quite common in women, but often fails to be correctly diagnosed. Women with the condition tend to have heavy periods, since they actually have a bleeding disorder. Severe afflictions may result in the women receiving a hysterectomy unnecessarily, when the underlying cause has not been identified. See the introduction to Von Willebrand's disease and bleeding disorder.

Rare type of breast cancer without a lump: There is a less common form of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer. Its symptoms can be an inflammation of the breast tissue, such as with a breast rash with redness and warmth, but not necessarily a physical breast lump. This type of breast cancer should be considered as an uncommon possibility for certain types of breast symptoms.

Ectopic pregnancy can be life threatening: Ectopic pregnancy is one of the leading causes of death in the 1st trimester. Physicians must not depend only on the physical symptoms alone and an ultrasound must be done in a female patient of child bearing age presenting with acute abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding. Due to the acute onset of pain it may be misdiagnosed as renal colic, acute appendicitis or ovarian torsion. Early diagnosis can save the patients life.

Missed abortion can be diagnosed early: Missed abortion is to be considered in female patients presenting with abatement of the pregnancy symptoms before 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is usually a condition in which an intrauterine pregnancy is present but does not have normal development. This could mean that it could be a blighted ovum, empty sac or foetal demise which occurs before 20 weeks of intrauterine life. Regular check up with the doctor will be able to diagnose the condition and an ultrasound along with physical examination will help in coming to the right diagnosis and also helps in differentiating it from other types of abortion such an incomplete abortion and inevitable abortion. This is clearly done on the basis of physical examination.

Genital lichen planus uncommon: Genital lichen planus is relatively uncommon but can affect both the vagina vulva. The lesions appear as white reticulated papules and plaques and erosions may occur. Patient may complain of itching, vaginal bleeding, dyspareunia and postcoital bleeding. A biopsy is needed to make a diagnosis. It maybe misdiagnosed as lichen sclerosis, pemphigus vulgaris, bullous and cicatricial pemphigoid and erythema multiforme. Topical steroids provide symptomatic relief.
