Glossary for Tick-borne diseases

  • Babesiosis: A parastic infection by a particular protozoa (Babesia) which is transmitted through tick bites. The disease produces symptoms similar to malaria.
  • Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
  • Colorado tick fever: A tickborne condition caused by an arenavirus
  • Contagious Diseases: Any disease that can be transferred from person to person
  • Ehrlichiosis: Bacterial tick-borne disease
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Flavivirus: A group B arbovirus that causes disease in humans and animals
  • Insect-borne diseases: Any disease that is carried by insects and transmitted to humans
  • Joint pain: Pain affecting the joints
  • Lyme disease: Lyme disease is an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia.
  • Meningoencephalitis: A condition which is characterized by inflammation of the brain and meninges
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Photophobia: An exaggerated or irrational fear of light.
  • Queensland tick typhus: Form of typhus from North-Australian ticks
  • Rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
  • Relapsing fever: Tick-borne disease with symptoms that resolve and then relapse
  • Rickettsia: A self limiting condition that is transmitted by mites
  • Rickettsial disease: A disease caused by infection with rickettsial bacteria which are transmitted by arthropods such as ticks, mites and lice. Different rickettsial bacteria can cause different types of infections such as typhus, spotted fever and trench fever. Symptoms can vary somewhat between the different types.
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever: A bacterial disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and transmitted by ticks. The condition causes fever and a characteristic rash and may be fatal in severe or untreated cases.
  • STARI: Bacterial infection and skin rash due to illness from a tick bite
  • Scrub typhus: Type of typhus usually caught from ticks
  • Swelling symptoms: Symptoms causing swelling or enlargement.
  • Tick bite: When an individual is bitten by a tick
  • Tick paralysis: Paralysis from Australian tick bites
  • Tick-borne diseases: Any disease that is transferred to humans by the tick
  • Typhus: A general name for various arthropod-borne rickettsial infections
  • Vasculitis: Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
  • Zoonotic Diseases: When a condition is transmitted through a zoonotic organisms
