Glossary for Toxic Shock Syndrome

  • Acute Tracheitis: Tracheitis is a bacterial infection of the trachea and is capable of producing airway obstruction
  • Adverse reaction: A reaction that is not anticipated and detrimentally affects the patient
  • Childbirth: Delivery of a fetus by a pregnant woman.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Eczema: Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by skin inflammation and irritation. The severity of extent of the condition is highly variable. It may be caused by allergies, irritants or other factors such as stress.
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Flu-like symptoms: Symptoms similar to flu including fever
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Kawasaki disease: A childhood illness that generally affects the skin, mouth and lymph nodes.
  • Muscle aches: Aches affecting one or more muscles
  • Myalgia: Muscle aches and pains
  • Rickettsial disease: A disease caused by infection with rickettsial bacteria which are transmitted by arthropods such as ticks, mites and lice. Different rickettsial bacteria can cause different types of infections such as typhus, spotted fever and trench fever. Symptoms can vary somewhat between the different types.
  • Scarlet fever: A complication of infection from strep bacteria such as strep throat.
  • Sepsis: The presence of pathological micro-organisms in the blood
  • Shock: Severe condition from reduced blood circulation
  • Sore throat: Discomfort in the throat or with swallowing
  • Staphylococcal infection: Any infection caused by the bacteria staphylococcal
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome: A rare but serious condition involving inflammation and blistering of the skin and mucous membranes. It is believed to be an allergic reaction that can occur in response to some drugs or infectious diseases.
  • Thrombocytopenia: Decreased platelets in the blood
  • Tonsilitis: Inflammation of the tonsils in the throat.
  • Toxemia: A medical condition that occurs when there is a release of toxins from bacteria within the bloodstream
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis: A skin condition causing widespread blisters to erupt over greater than 30% of the body.
  • Wound Infection: Infection of a skin wound.
