Glossary for Transverse myelitis

  • Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis: A rare neurological disorder where an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord occurs due to damage to the protective covering (myelin sheath) around the nerves.
  • Brown-Sequard Syndrome: A disorder where spinal cord compression and lesions involve only half of the spinal cord.
  • Chickenpox: Common viral infection.
  • Coordination problems: Symptoms affecting physical coordination.
  • Demyelinating disorder: Any condition that is characterised by the destruction of the myelin sheaths of the nerves
  • Demyelination: is a destructive process of removal of myelin
  • Devic disease: A rare nerve disorder involving demyelination of spinal cord and eye nerves.
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome: Rare autoimmune disorder destroying nerve function lead to weakness and paralysis.
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Lower back pain: Pain in the lower back region
  • Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
  • Malaise: General feelings of discomfort or being ill-at-ease.
  • Marburg virus: Serious virus related to Ebola.
  • Measles: Once common viral infection now rare due to vaccination.

  • Raynaud's phenomenon: Blood vessel constriction attacks affecting fingers and/or toes.
  • Sensations: Changes to sensations or the senses
  • Smallpox: Dangerous virus now almost eliminated worldwide by vaccination.
  • Spinal Cord Disorders: Any condition that affects the spinal cord
  • Spinal cord injury: Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord as a result of a direct trauma to the spinal cord itself or as a result of indirect damage to the bones and soft tissues and vessels surrounding the spinal cord.
  • Spine symptoms: Symptoms affecting the spine
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
  • Wegener's granulomatosis: A rare disease involving blood vessel inflammation which can affect the blood flow to various tissues and organs and hence cause damage. The respiratory system and the kidneys are the main systems affected.
