Trichomoniasis: DSTD (Excerpt)
Trichomoniasis in
pregnant women may cause premature rupture of the membranes and preterm
delivery. The genital inflammation caused by trichomoniasis might also
increase a woman's risk of acquiring HIV infection if she is exposed to
HIV. Trichomoniasis in a woman who is also infected with HIV can increase
the chances of transmitting HIV infection to a sex partner. (Source: excerpt from Trichomoniasis: DSTD)
Vaginitis Due to Vaginal Infections, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID (Excerpt)
Research has shown a link between trichomoniasis and two serious
sequelae. Data suggest that trichomoniasis is associated with
increased risk of transmission of HIV and may cause a woman to
deliver a low-birth-weight or premature infant. Additional
research is needed to fully explore these relationships. (Source: excerpt from Vaginitis Due to Vaginal Infections, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID)
Vaginal Infections & Vaginitis: NWHIC (Excerpt)
Although previously trichomoniasis was not thought to result in any
important complications, recent studies have linked it to two serious
subsequent problems. Data now suggest that trichomoniasis may increase the
risk of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that
causes AIDS, and may cause delivery of low-birth-weight or premature
infants. Additional research is needed to fully explore these
relationships. (Source: excerpt from Vaginal Infections & Vaginitis: NWHIC)
