Glossary for Tumor

  • Abnormalities, Radiation-Induced: Conditions arising from the use of radiation therapy to treat various cancers. Radiation therapy can result in minor abnormalities such as dry, flaky skin or serious abnormalities such as cancer.
  • Abscess: General name for any pus-filled lump or swelling
  • Angiofollicular lymph hyperplasia: A rare disorder of the lymph system characterized by the development of benign tumors in lymph tissue anywhere in the body.
  • Benign tumor: A tumor or growth that remains localized; not always harmless.
  • Caffeine - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that exposure to caffeine during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Chronic Sinusitis: Chronic form of sinusitis, inflammation of the sinus cavities.
  • Codeine - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Codeine (an opiate drug) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Cyst: Lump produced by over-secreting gland
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Blood clot in vein, often in calf muscle vein in the leg.
  • Edema: Fluid retention in tissues
  • Eyelid disorders: Any disorder that affects ones eyelid
  • Galactorrhea: Abnormal breast milk production
  • Hiccups: Noise and diaphragm muscle contractions (properly called "hiccoughs")
  • Leishmaniasis: A rare infectious disease caused by any of a number of parasitic Leishmania species. Infection can cause any of three different manifestations: cutaneous leishmaniasis, mucosal leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis.
  • Lidocaine - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Lidocaine during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Lump: Any type of lump on the skin or body areas
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum: Type of chlamydia (sexually transmitted disease)
  • Mental illness: Any psychological syndrome
  • Mycosis fungoides, familial: A rare form of lymphatic cancer (T-cell lymphoma) that primarily affects the skin and tends to occur with higher than normal frequency within a family. The skin is affected first, then the lymph nodes become inflamed and usually cancerous. The cancer can then spread to organs such as the liver, lungs and bone marrow. Survival depends on how early treatment starts. Patients diagnosed in the early stages can survive more than 12 years whereas once the cancer has spread to other organs, death usually occurs within three years.
  • Neuroblastoma: Neuroblastoma is a malignant (cancerous) tumor of infants and children that develops from nerve tissue.
  • Neurofibromatosis-1: Genetic disorder often leading to tumors on nerves.
  • Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
  • Radiation related neoplasm: Tumors caused by exposure to radiation which is often used to treat various conditions. Usually the tumor develops many years or even decades after the exposure and the tumors tend to occur in the part of the body exposed to the radiation. The tumor can develop in virtually any part of the body and thus the symptoms are highly variable.
  • Sanderson-Fraser syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized by overlapping fingers, abnormally placed urethral opening in males, protruding eyes and Robin association (small jaw and downward displaced tongue).
  • Sarcoma: A malignant carcinoma that is located in connective tissue
  • Sinusitis: Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
  • Swelling symptoms: Symptoms causing swelling or enlargement.
  • Tumor: Any type of lump or swelling (not just cancers)
  • Warthin's tumour: A benign parathyroid tumour
