Mantoux test

Mantoux test: The Mantoux test is an intradermal injection of pure protein from the tubercule bacillus. The diameter of the injection site is an indicator of local inflammation and to diagnose tuberculosis.

Mantoux test: Other Names

Other names for Mantoux test include:

  • Mantoux tuberculosis skin test
  • PPD (purified protein derivative) skin test

Symptoms Associated with Mantoux test

These symptoms may be diagnosed by, screened for, or associated with Mantoux test:

  • Unexplained productive cough
  • Abnormal chest X-ray
  • Hemoptysis (may include coughing blood)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Suspected contact with person infected with tuberculosis-causing bacteria

Descriptions of Mantoux test

Mantoux test: A protein extracted from boiled culture of tubercle bacilli (MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS). It is used in the tuberculin skin test (TUBERCULIN TEST) for the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection in asymptomatic persons.
