Dairy-avoidance diet

Introduction: Dairy-avoidance diet

Certain conditions require the avoidance of cow milk or other dairy products. The extent of the restriction depends on how important the avoidance of these products is. Obvious products containing milk or milk products include:

  • milk
  • infant formula (milk-based)
  • cheese
  • yoghurt
  • butter

Substitutes for dairy products may include breast milk, goat milk, sheep milk, and soy milk.

Furthermore, dairy products such as "milk solids" are very widely used as an additive for numerous types of products. Whether these products need to be avoided depends on the reason for the dairy-free diet. Some products that often contain milk solids or other dairy items include:

  • Breads
  • Margarine
  • Muesli bars
  • Processed meats
  • Soy cheese

Not all ingredient descriptions make it clear that milk is contained in the food product. Some of the names for milk-related items that may not be obvious include casein (a milk protein), margarine (usually contains milk), whey, and probably other names.
