The sulfonylureas are the longest existing diabetes pills. They are simple in action, stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin.
First generation Sulfonylureas are the oldest type of pills that stimulate the pancreas, now less widely used due to newer second generation sulfonylureas and other pills. Examples: chlorpropamide (Diabinese, Glucamide), tolazamide (Ronase, Tolinase), tolbutamide (Orinase, Oramide), acetohexamide (Dymelor).
Sulfonylureas (second generation): lower doses than first-generation sylfonylureas. Examples: glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase, Micronase) and glimepiride (Amaryl).
