Transplants
Introduction: Transplants
Transplants involve the transfer of human body cells or organs
from one person to another.
The most well-known transplants are full organ transplants
such as kidney transplants,
liver transplants, lung transplants, and heart transplants.
However, there are actually many types of transplants:
The most common type of transplants are from one person to another.
Other types of transplants are:
- Autologous transplants - The transfer of cells from the same person back to themself.
Common examples are hair transplants, skin grafts, or self-blood transfusions (e.g. own blood stored prior
to use in a scheduled surgical operation).
These self-transplants avoid the possiblity of transplant rejection or GVHD
as complications of a transplant.
- Xenotransplants - The transplant of animal cells or organs, such as from pigs.
Transplants and contagion:
Yes, it is possible for a person receiving
a transplant to get an infectious disease from a transplanted organ.
However, it does not seem possible to contract cancer
or autoimmunity from a transplant.
Perhaps it is theoretically possible, but such cases are very rare.
Transplants and genetic diseases:
One interesting factor about transplants
is that they have different DNA to the person receiving the transplant.
This makes transplants an effective treatment for some genetic diseases.
For example, a person with cystic fibrosis who receives a lung transplant (or a
double lung transplant)
will no longer have CF-related lung problems in the transplanted lung.
