Infection of the umbilical cord after birth. The infection can result from unhygienic methods of cutting the cord or lack of hygienic care of the umbilical cord stump until it falls off. The umbilical stump needs to be kept clean and dry until it falls off. The infection from the umbilical cord can in rare cases spread to other parts of the body and may be fatal if untreated.
