Glossary for Uterine fibroids

  • Adenomyosis: A rare disorder where the endometrium (lining of the uterus) grows inside the muscle walls of the uterus. The condition is generally harmless but can be very painful.
  • Bladder conditions: Any condition affecting the bladder
  • Chronic pelvic pain:
  • Dysmenorrhea: Pain, cramping, or discomfort due to menstruation
  • Ectopic pregnancy: A condition where a fertilized egg embeds itself outside the uterus.
  • Endometrial Cancer: Cancer of the endometrium (uterus lining).
  • Excessive menstrual bleeding: A condition which is characterized by an abnormal excess of blood loss during menstruation
  • Hereditary Leiomyomatosis and Renal Cell Cancer: A rare inherited condition characterized by the presence of tumors that develop from smooth muscle tissue in the skin, uterus and the kidneys. The skin anomalies can occur on any part of the body and gradually increase in number and size with age. Kidney tumors develop in only a relatively small proportion of patients with the condition.
  • Interstitial cystitis: A rare condition involving inflammatory disease of the bladder which progresses slowly.
  • Leiomyosarcoma: A rare soft tissue cancer that arises from smooth muscle cells which form the involuntary muscles. Smooth muscle cells can occur in the skin, uterus, stomach, intestine and blood vessel walls. The main location for these tumors is in the uterus, retroperitoneum, pelvis and large blood vessels such as the inferior vena cava. Symptoms depend on the size and location of the tumor.
  • Menstrual irregularities: Any condition that is associated with the female menstrual cycle
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Ovarian Cancer: Cancer of the ovaries.
  • PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome: PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome is a group of conditions caused by a mutation in the PTEN gene. The primary characteristic of the condition is the development of multiple hamartomas (tumor-like growth) in virtually any part of the body. The growths are generally not cancerous but patients often have an increased risk of developing various cancers. Specific conditions covered by this term are Cowden syndrome, BAnnayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba Syndrome and Proteus syndrome.

  • Polyp: An growth or protrusion that extends from a mucous membrane
  • Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
  • Sexual Conditions: Any condition that affects sexual function
  • Uterine Cancer: Cancer of the uterus.
  • Uterine leiomyoma: A condition which is characterized by a benign tumour of the uterus derived from smooth muscle
  • Uterus conditions: Any condition that affects the female uterus
