Glossary for Vitiligo

  • Addison's Disease: A rare progressive hormonal disorder characterized by insufficient production of certain hormones called adrenal corticosteroids.
  • Alezzandrini syndrome: A rare condition involving degenerative eye disease in one eye, followed by other facial symptoms on the same side and hearing impairment. The condition progresses over months or years.
  • Alopecia Areata: A condition involving one or more bald patches on the head. These patches may merge and lead to complete baldness.
  • Arm symptoms: Symptoms affecting the arm
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • Candidiasis familial chronic mucocutaneous, autosomal dominant, with thyroid disease: A dominantly inherited condition characterized by poor immunity to fungal infections (particularly those caused by Candida albicans) as will as thyroid disease. Persistent fungal infections tend to affect the nails, skin or mucous membranes. The degree of severity is variable with some cases leading to fugal infection of the brain which is usually fatal.
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Eczema: Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by skin inflammation and irritation. The severity of extent of the condition is highly variable. It may be caused by allergies, irritants or other factors such as stress.
  • Emotional symptoms: Symptoms affecting the emotions.
  • Eye conditions: Any condition that affects the eyes
  • Face symptoms: Symptoms affecting the face
  • Foot symptoms: Symptoms affecting one or both feet
  • Graves Disease: is an autoimmune disease characterized by hyperthyroidism due to circulating autoantibodies. Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIs) bind to and activate thyrotropin receptors, causing the thyroid gland to grow and the thyroid follicles to increase synthesis of thyroid hormone.
  • Graying: Gray coloring of the hair
  • Hand symptoms: Symptoms affecting the hand
  • Hyperthyroidism: Too much thyroid hormone production.
  • Hypomelanotic disorder: Lack of pigmentation
  • Leprosy: A chronic, progressive infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae which causes skin sores and also affects the eyes, mucous membranes and peripheral nerves.
  • Melanoma: Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. It is the leading cause of death from skin disease. It involves cells called melanocytes, which produce a skin pigment called melanin. Melanin is responsible for skin and hair color.
  • Neurosis: Variety of mental disorders with self-awareness
  • Pernicious anemia: Pernicious anemia is a blood disorder where the body is unable to use it properly use Vitamin B12 to make red blood cells.
  • Physical conditions: Any condition that physically affects an individual
  • Pinta: An infectious skin disease caused by infection with the spirochete Treponema carateum which causes skin rash and discoloration.
  • Pityriasis Versicolor: Fungal skin infection
  • Polyendocrine deficiency syndrome type 2: Multi-endocrine syndrome usually affecting young adults.
  • Retina Conditions: Any condition that affects the retina of the eye
  • Schrander-Stumpel, Theunissen, Hulsmans syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized mainly by vitiligo, psychomotor retardation, cleft lip and other facial anomalies.
  • Skin conditions: Any condition that affects the skin
  • Skin rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
  • Society problems: Difficulty interacting in society.
  • Spondylometaphyseal dysplasia with combined immunodeficiency: A rare syndrome characterized by skeletal abnormalities as well as a poor immune system.
  • Stress: Emotional stress (sometimes refers to physical stress)
  • Sunburn: Any injury to the skin caused by the ultraviolet rays caused by the sun
  • Tinea versicolor: A condition which is characterized by a chronic noninflammatory multiple macular patches
  • Uveitis: A condition which is characterised by the inflammation of the uvea of the eye
  • Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Syndrome: A rare condition characterized by poliosis and hair, skin, eye and ear abnormalities as well as retinal detachment and neurological involvement.
  • Whitaker syndrome: A condition that usually occurs in childhood caused by an autoimmune polyendocrinopathy
  • White skin patches: The occurrence of white patches on ones skin
