Glossary for Von Hippel-Lindau Disease

  • "cafe-au-lait" spots: Where there are macules of a light brown colour located on the skin
  • Adrenal Cancer: A malignant cancer that develops in the adrenal gland. The tumor may be nonfunctioning (does not produce hormones) or functioning in which case excessive levels of hormones can cause a variety of symptoms depending on which hormone is involved. Adrenal hormones made in the cortex (outer part of the gland) are aldosterone, corticosteroids and androgenic steroids. Adrenalin and noradrenalin are the hormones made in the medulla (central part of the adrenal gland).
  • Angioma: Clump of blood or lymph vessels usually in the skin
  • Blindness: The inability to see out of the eyes
  • Brain cancer: Cancer of the brain.
  • Brain symptoms: Symptoms affecting the brain
  • Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
  • Dizziness: Feelings of lightheadedness or giddiness.
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hemangioblastoma: A benign tumor that tends to occur in the central nervous system such as the brain and spinal cord. The tumor arises from the stem cells that develop into blood vessels or blood cells (hemangioblasts). Symptoms vary depending on the exact location and size of the tumor.
  • Hemangioma: A condition which is characterized by a benign tumour cause by newly formed blood vessels
  • Kidney Cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the kidneys
  • Pancreatic cancer: Pancreatic cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas
  • Permanent brain damage: A condition which is characterized by damage to the brains function that is permanent in nature
  • Pheochromocytoma: Pheochromocytoma is a neuroendocrine tumor of the medulla of the adrenal glands (originating in the chromaffin cells), or extra-adrenal chromaffin tissue that failed to involute after birth and secretes excessive amounts of catecholamines, usually epinephrine and norepinephrine.
  • Simple kidney cysts: Usually harmless kidney cysts appearing later in life.
  • Von Hippel-Lindau Disease: Genetic disease causing multiple benign tumors
  • Walking symptoms: Problems with walking.
