Glossary for Von Willebrand disease

  • Angiodysplasia: Abnormality of small blood vessels - especially in the intestinal tract - which can result in bleeding. The size of the lesion involved determines the severity of the condition. Small amounts of bleeding from one lesion often goes unnoticed but multiple large lesions may cause heavy bleeding and result in black tarry stool and anemia.
  • Bleeding disorders: Any disorder leading to bleeding or bruising.
  • Bleeding symptoms: Any type of bleeding symptoms.
  • Blood conditions: Conditions that affect the blood
  • Bruising: Bleeding under skin leading to discoloration.
  • Coagulopathy: A disorder of the blood where it fails to clot normally.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Heavy periods: Excessive menstrual bleeding (called menorrhagia or hypermenorrhea)
  • Hypothyroidism: Too little thyroid hormone production.
  • Neurofibromatosis-Noonan syndrome: A rare disorder where the patients has symptoms of neurofibromatosis (nerve tumors) and Noonan syndrome (short stature, bleeding problems, heart defect, unusual facial features, skeletal anomalies, webbed neck).
  • Noonan Syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by a webbed neck, chest deformity, undescended testes and pulmonic stenosis.
  • Nosebleeds: The discharge of blood from the nose
  • Postpartum hemorrhage: Excessive bleeding after childbirth delivery
  • Thrombocytopenia: Decreased platelets in the blood
  • Under-diagnosed conditions: Any medical condition that is undiagnosed
  • Uremia: Excessive urea and waste products in the blood
  • Waldenström Macroglobulinemia: A rare disorder involving malignancy of the lymph and blood cells.
  • Wilms' tumor: A malignant kidney tumor that occurs in children.
