Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia: Introduction

Chronic discomfort of the vulva (external female genitals) which causes irritation or a burning or stinging sensation. The discomfort can range from mild to quite severe where sex is impossible and even sitting is painful. The condition usually starts suddenly and may continue for long periods of time, even years. The exact cause is unknown but conditions such as frequent yeast infections, genital warts and frequent antibiotic use may be involved. Also known as chronic vulvar pain.

Symptoms of Vulvodynia

  • Pain
  • Itching or unpleasant sensations on the outside of the vagina
  • Varying intensity
  • May be worsened by sexual intercourse
  • Walking or sitting
