What is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome?
- Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome: A rare degenerative brain disorder caused by thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency. Chronic alcoholics are prone to this condition.
Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, or a subtype of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
