Glossary for Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome

  • Abnormal eye movements: Uncontrollable eye movements are involuntary, rapid, and repetitive movement of the eyes.
  • Agitation: A state of increased tension with episodes of emotional and physical irritability.
  • Alcoholism: Alcoholism is the compulsive urge to drink alcohol despite knowing the negative impact on one's health.
  • Brain conditions: Medical conditions that affect the brain
  • Cold skin: The sensation of coldness located in ones skin
  • Coma: Prolonged unconsciousness
  • Confusion: Mental confusion and impaired thinking.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Drowsiness: Excessive tiredness or sleepiness
  • Eye movement symptoms: Symptoms affecting the movement of the eye
  • Forgetfulness: Forgetting things or loss of memory ability
  • Kwashiorkor: A malnutrition state that is produced by severe protein deficiency
  • Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: A block in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, causing enlarged ventricles and brain atrophy.
  • Nystagmus: Involuntary jerky eye movements
  • Ophthalmoplegia: A disorder that is characterised by the paralysis of the eye muscles
  • Staggering gait: When a patients gait is staggering in nature
  • Thiamine deficiency: Dietary deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine)
  • Wernicke's encephalopathy: Brain condition with various effects
