Glossary for Williams Syndrome

  • Aortic supravalvular stenosis: A rare congenital condition involving increased intestinal calcium absorption and characterized by development delay, distinctive facial features, small nails and short stature.
  • Brain conditions: Medical conditions that affect the brain
  • Cholelithiasis: Is the presence of gallstones in the gallbladder
  • Chronic constipation: Long term decrease in mass and frequency of bowel motions and difficulty passing bowel motions.
  • Coordination problems: Symptoms affecting physical coordination.
  • Developmental problems: Physical or mental development difficulty.
  • Digestive symptoms: Any symptoms affecting the digestive tract.
  • Diverticular Disease: Protrusions of the colon wall (diverticulosis) or their inflammation (diverticulitis)
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Hypercalcemia: Raised level of calcium in the blood
  • Hypertension: High blood pressure
  • Intrauterine Growth Retardation: Slowly growing fetus in the womb during pregnancy
  • Joint hypermobility: Increased movement of the joints with a predisposition to being dislocated.
  • Movement symptoms: Changes to movement or motor abilities
  • Nephrocalcinosis: A condition characterized by calcium salt deposits in the kidneys which may affect it's ability to function. The condition refers to a generally increased level of calcium in the kidneys rather than actual localized deposits such as occurs in kidney stones. It may be caused by such things as high blood calcium levels and tuberculosis. The condition often goes unnoticed until kidney or urinary tract stones form.
  • Obesity: An increase in the body weight greater than that required for normal function that is characterised by the accumulation of excessive fat
  • Personality symptoms: Symptoms or changes to the personality.
  • Spherophakia brachymorphia syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by short stature, and craniofacial, eye, tooth and limb abnormalities.
  • Squint: Eyes not moving together properly

  • Williams Syndrome: A syndrome characterised by mental retardation, facial abnormalities and emotional instability
