Glossary for X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia

AIDS: A term given to HIV patients who have a low CD4 count (below 200) which means that they have low levels of a type of immune cell called T-cells. AIDS patients tend to develop opportunistic infections and cancers. Opportunistic infections are infections that would not normally affect a person with a healthy immune system. The HIV virus is a virus that attacks the body's immune system.
Bacteremia: A condition where there is the presence of bacteria in the blood
Bronchiectasis: Chronic bronchiole dilation from secretions and blockages.
Carrier conditions: A condition where a person is symptom-free despite a genetic or infectious disease
Chronic Granulomatous Disease: A very rare inherited blood disorder where certain cells involved with immunity (phagocytes) are unable to destroy bacteria and hence the patient suffers repeated bacterial infections.
Common Variable Immunodeficiency: An immunodeficiency disorder involving low blood gamma globulin levels which results in an increased susceptibility to infections. The condition may be inherited or can be caused by certain drugs (levamisole, hydantoin and carbamazepine).
Ear infection: An infection that affects the ear
Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
Growth Hormone Deficiency: A deficiency in growth hormone which results in poor growth.
Hepatitis: Any type of liver inflammation or infection.
Hyper-IgM Syndrome: A rare inherited immunodeficiency disorder which causes frequent infections involving the ears, eyes, sinuses, lungs, skin, respiratory tract and other areas of the body.
Immune deficiency conditions: Any of various diseases that suppress the immune system.
Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
Infection: Infections as a symptom.
Lung symptoms: Symptoms affecting one or both lungs.
Pneumonia: Infection of the lung by bacteria, viruses or fungus.
Polio: Dangerous virus now rare due to vaccination.
Poor growth: Poor body growth or delayed physical development.
Primary Immune Deficiency: Various types of immune deficiencies; usually genetic.
Recessive Genetic Diseases: A disease that produces an effect in humans only when it is homozygous
Retinal dystrophy:
SCID: Major failure of the immune system, usually genetic.
Selective IgA Deficiency: Immune deficiency from lacking immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies.
Sinusitis: Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia: A rare bone growth disorder affecting the spine and ends of bones and resulting in short stature.
Tonsil symptoms: Symptoms affecting the tonsils
Viral Hepatitis: hepatitis describes inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis may be caused by alcohol, drugs, autoimmune diseases, metabolic diseases, and viruses. Viral infection accounts for more than half the cases of acute hepatitis.
X Chromosome Disorders: Any condition that affects the x chromosome of an individual
X-linked Genetic Diseases: Genetic disease where the mutated gene is on the X chromosome
X-linked Recessive Genetic Diseases: Genetic disease where the mutated gene is recessive and on the X chromosome
