X-linked Recessive Genetic Diseases

X-linked Recessive Genetic Diseases: Introduction

X-linked genetic conditions are genetic diseases affecting the sex chromosomes X and Y. They are called "x-linked" or "sex-linked" genetic conditions. (For comparison, non-sex chromosomes 1..22 are called "autosomes" and the resulting conditions called autosomal genetic diseases.)

Recessive diseases are genetic diseases where both copies of a gene must be damaged or mutated. In other words, the genetic error usually needs to be inherited from both parents to get the disease. Inheriting this gene error from only one parent usually causes the person to be a "carrier" of the disease, still having the genetic error, but without any diseases or symptoms.
