Glossary for Yaws

  • Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
  • Bone symptoms: Symptoms affecting the body's bones
  • Chancre: An ulcer like eruption that is located on an epithelial surface
  • Diseases contagious from bedding: Diseases that can be contracted from bedding
  • Diseases contagious from clothing: Diseases that are contracted from clothes
  • Joint symptoms: Symptoms affecting the joints.
  • Leg ulcers: Ulcers or sores on the legs.
  • Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
  • Periostitis: Inflammation of the periosteum (outside layer) of the bone.
  • Pinta: An infectious skin disease caused by infection with the spirochete Treponema carateum which causes skin rash and discoloration.
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Various diseases spread by sexual contact.
  • Tertiary syphilis: A condition which is characterized by late generalized syphilis with involvement of many organs and tissues
  • Ulcer: A local defect in the mucosa
  • Yaws: A rare infections disease caused by the spiral-shaped bacteria Treponema pertenue. The disease consists of three phases: skin lesions are followed by bone, joint and widespread skin symptoms and finally by inflammation and destruction of cartilage in the nose, pharynx and palate. Transmission can be through direct contact with infected skin, insect bites or sex.
