Glossary for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Abdominal pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
  • Carcinoid: Particular type of tumor.
  • Cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder which concentrates and stores bile. The condition may occur suddenly (acute) or persist over a longer period of time (chronic).
  • Chronic diarrhea: Diarrhoea lasting for more than 3 weeks
  • Crohn's disease: Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the digestive system. It is one of a group of diseases called inflammatory bowel disease. The disease can affect any area from the mouth to the anus. It often affects the lower part of the small intestine called the ileum.
  • Diabetic Diarrhea: Diarrhea that occurs in diabetics as a result of the damage done by diabetes to the digestive system. Digestive system damage is caused by intestinal neuropathy (damage to intestinal nerves) or bacterial overgrowth or both.
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.
  • Digestive symptoms: Any symptoms affecting the digestive tract.
  • Duodenal ulcer: A peptic ulcer is erosion in the lining of the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The word "peptic" refers to pepsin, a stomach enzyme that breaks down proteins. If a peptic ulcer is located in the stomach it is called a gastric ulcer.
  • Endocrine system cancer: Cancer that affects any gland in the endocrine system
  • Epigastric pain: Pain located in the upper and middle region of the abdomen
  • Esophagitis: Inflammation of the esophagus
  • Gastric Ulcer: A gastric ulcer is a break in the normal tissue that lines the stomach.
  • Gastrinoma: Rare tumors secreting the digestive hormone gastrin.
  • Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach lining
  • Gastro-enteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor: A rare form of gastrointestinal tumor. It includes two main groups of cancer called carcinoid and endocrine pancreatic tumors. Some of the tumors consist of hormone secreting cells which results in excessive secretion of certain hormones.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Repeated reflux of stomach acid into the throat.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Internal bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Glucagonoma: Rare cancer of the glucagon-producing pancreas cells.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Any type of digestive condition caused by bowel inflammation.
  • Insulinoma: A rare form of pancreatic cancer that causes excessive secretion of the hormone insulin. A relatively small number of cases are malignant.
  • Intestinal obstruction: Blockage in the intestines of the digestive tract.
  • Melena: Black, tarry stools with an offensive odour caused by an upper gastrointestinal bleed.
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia: A group of conditions that is characterised by the hyperplasia and hyperfunction of two or more glands of the endocrine system
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1: Rare inherited disease causing tumors in multiple glands
  • Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
  • Pancreas conditions: Any condition that affects the pancreas
  • Pancreatic cancer: Pancreatic cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas
  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas causing digestive complaints.
  • Peptic Ulcer: Ulcer on the lining of the stomach or duodenum
  • Rapid gastric emptying: Dumping of undigested food from the stomach into intestine.
  • Somatostatinoma: A very rare disorder where tumors in glands that produce somatostatin affect the secretion of the hormone. The tumor mainly occurs in the pancreas but can also occur in the intestinal tract.
  • Stomach Conditions: Any condition that affects a persons stomach
  • Ulcerative colitis: Ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa, UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon.
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: A rare disorder where excessive levels of the hormone gastrin are released into the stomach which increases stomach acidity which results in peptic ulcer development. A hormone secreting pancreatic or duodenal tumor is usually the cause.
